Tai Chi is a Chinese cosmological term for
the "Supreme Ultimate" state of undifferentiated absolute and
infinite potentiality. Tai Chi is understood to be the highest
conceivable principle, that from which existence flows. The
theory of yin and yang is often symbolized by various forms of
the Tai Chi symbol. Yang
is fast, hard, solid, hot, dry, and aggressive; and is associated
with fire, sky, the sun, masculinity and day time.Yin,
by contrast, is characterized as slow, soft, cold, wet, and passive;
and is associated with water, earth, the moon, femininity and
night time. The "supreme ultimate" creates yang
and yin: movement generates yang; when its activity reaches its
limit, it becomes tranquil. Through tranquility the supreme ultimate
generates yin. When tranquility has reached its limit, there is
a return to movement. Movement and tranquility, in alternation,
become each the source of the other. By the transformations of
the yang and the union of the yin, the 5 elements of water, fire,
wood, metal and earth are produced. These 5 elements become diffused,
which creates harmony. Yin and yang produced all things, and these
in their turn produce and reproduce, this makes these processes
On the other hand, in the I Ching, yin and yang are represented
by broken and solid lines: yang is solid and yin is broken. These
are then combined into trigrams, which are more yang or more yin
depending on the number of broken and solid lines. The relative
positions and numbers of yin and yang lines within the trigrams
determines the meaning of a trigram. There are all together 8
trigrams which form a bagua.
